IUD Insertion & Removal in Nerang, Gold Coast

Nerang Medical Centre & Skin Clinic provides IUD insertion and removal – including hormonal IUDs (Mirena and Kyleena) and the copper IUD – in a private, supportive setting in Nerang. An intrauterine device (IUD) is a highly effective, long-term and reversible form of contraception, and hormonal IUDs may also help manage heavy periods. Our trained GPs talk you through your options, carry out the procedure, and provide follow-up care. Female GP available, and we’re open 7 days a week.

Why consider an IUD?

  • Highly effective, long-term contraception (lasting around 3–10 years depending on the type)
  • Low maintenance and reversible – fertility returns after removal
  • Hormonal IUDs may help reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and period pain
  • A good option if you’d prefer not to take a daily contraceptive

Types of IUD

Hormonal IUD (Mirena or Kyleena):
Releases a small amount of hormone to prevent pregnancy, and may also reduce menstrual bleeding.

Copper IUD (non-hormonal):
Uses copper to prevent pregnancy, without hormones.

Your GP will help you weigh up which option suits your body, your needs and your plans.

What to expect

Getting an IUD usually involves two appointments: a consultation to discuss your options, check suitability and arrange a prescription if needed, and then the insertion appointment itself. The insertion takes a few minutes; some people feel cramping similar to period pain during and after the procedure. Your GP will talk you through pain-relief options and aftercare, and you’ll have a follow-up to check everything is settling well. Please allow enough time for your appointment.

Risks and your comfort

IUD insertion is a common procedure, but like any procedure it carries some risks — such as cramping or discomfort, and less commonly issues like the device moving or, rarely, other complications. Your GP will explain the benefits and risks relevant to you before you decide, answer your questions, and support your comfort throughout. You’re welcome to seek a second opinion at any time.

Fees & Medicare

The IUD device is available on prescription – Mirena and Kyleena are subsidised under the PBS for eligible patients, and the copper IUD is purchased separately. Bulk billing is available for eligible Medicare patients with participating doctors; the insertion or removal procedure (a longer appointment) may involve an out-of-pocket cost. Please ask our reception team about costs when you book, and see [Bulk Billing & Fees].
