Iron Infusions in Nerang, Gold Coast
Nerang Medical Centre & Skin Clinic provides iron infusions (intravenous iron) for people with diagnosed iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia, close to home in Nerang. Low iron can cause symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath and difficulty concentrating. If oral iron isn’t working for you, an iron infusion may be an option – your GP will assess your symptoms and blood test results and discuss whether it’s suitable for you. We’re open 7 days a week, with on-site treatment and monitoring.
Who an iron infusion may suit
Your GP may consider an iron infusion if you:
- can’t tolerate or don’t absorb oral iron supplements well
- have ongoing blood loss or a condition that affects iron absorption
- need your iron levels topped up more quickly than oral iron allows.
An iron infusion is only suitable for some people, and it’s based on your symptoms and blood tests – so the first step is always a chat with your GP.
How it works & what to expect
Before an infusion, your GP will review your symptoms and recent blood tests to confirm iron deficiency and check that an infusion is appropriate. On the day, iron is given slowly into a vein through an intravenous (IV) line by our medical team, and you’ll be monitored during the infusion and for a short time afterwards. Please allow enough time for your appointment, as the infusion plus monitoring can take a while. Your GP will explain the process and answer your questions beforehand.
Safety and side effects
As with any infusion, there are some possible side effects and risks – most are mild (such as temporary nausea, headache or changes at the injection site), and more serious reactions are uncommon. Because you’re monitored on site, our team is on hand if you need anything. Your GP will discuss the potential benefits and risks with you before you decide, and you’re welcome to ask questions or seek a second opinion.
Will I feel better afterwards?
If your symptoms are caused by iron deficiency, restoring your iron levels can help – but how much, and how quickly, varies from person to person and depends on your individual situation. Your GP will explain what you can reasonably expect and arrange any follow-up blood tests to check your response.
Fees & Medicare
A consultation and a blood test are needed before an infusion. Bulk billing is available for eligible Medicare patients with participating doctors, and some iron products are subsidised under the PBS for eligible patients. The infusion itself may involve an out-of-pocket cost (for example, for the appointment time and administration). Please ask our reception team about costs when you book, and see [Bulk Billing & Fees].
